African Peace Research and Education Association (AFPREA) was founded in 2002 during the biennial conference of International Peace Research Association in Suwon, South Korea.
This international not-for-profit non-governmental organisation of peace researchers, educators and development practitioners from the continent of Africa and diaspora, is guided by a multi-dimensional outlook towards addressing the emerging global threats to peace and stability.
For AFPREA to achieve its goals of sustainable peace and development throughout Africa, the organisation undertakes measures of global, regional, sub-regional and national cooperation designed to assist the advancement of peace research, peace building and capacity building through the promotion of socio-economic advancement and sustainable livelihood.
To enable peace researchers, scholars and practitioners from the African continent and diaspora adopt an inter-disciplinary approach to addressing conflicts, participating in post-conflict peace development and reconstructing the image of Africa through positive social transformations.
· To promote national and international peace research and education
· To advance research into the conditions of peace and the causes of war and other forms of violence
· To encourage the international dissemination of information on peace research and its results
· To organize regional conferences and seminars in co-operation with its global think-tank International Peace Research Association as well as other academic and research institutions
The world is currently experiencing conflicts and instability which have impacted negatively on the realization of the social development goals. African continent has borne a great brunt of the conflicts with more than five African countries currently embroiled in armed conflicts. The quest of finding peace has been a sustained effort by various players like governments, international agencies and communities. However, this has remained a mirage. This is partly attributed to either lack or few researches to inform the various policy initiatives in enabling to find a long lasting peace.
To fill this gap African Peace Research and Education Association (AFPREA) was established. AFPREA is an African chapter of the International Peace Research Association (IPRA). The organization prides itself in conducting peace research and dissemination of peace education in a bid to help find a long lasting peace and the world of peaceful co-existence. AFPREA is a vibrant organization drawing membership from scholars and peace researchers from all the African countries. We are currently working on a schedule of holding various conferences annually on the African soil.
I am particular honoured to chair and contribute to the arching vision of finding a long lasting peace in the world and Africa in particular. The team work, commitment and quality researches by the scholars have been encouraging and contributed greatly immensely in advancing the mission of the organization. I hail the officials and members of AFPREA for such a fete.
